Borneo Backpackers is located at what was popularly known as "Australia Place", being the site of the Australian army camp when they first arrived in town at the end of World War II.

After the war, the building was erected in 1954 by the late Datuk Lo Kwok Chuen and became known as the Chung Nam Printing building. Datuk Lo Kwok Chuen was a well known social activist in Kota Kinabalu besides being a journalist and printer. Among his many involvements in the society, he was a member of the North Borneo Volunteer Services during World War II and received four campaign medals (Star Medal, Pacific Star, Defence medal, Victory Medal).

The Chung Nam Printing building ceased to be used as a printing building in the 1980's upon his retirement from business.

The ground floor of Borneo Backpackers is converted into a local post war coffee shop completed with antique furniture and traditional local foods, named "Borneo 1945 Museum Kopitiam".

On the walls inside and outside are displayed wartime photographs of Australians and British soldiers, local unsung heros as well as replicas of war memorial plaques in Sabah.

Outside the building are also displayed on its wall two plaques put up by Sabah Tourism Board and the Australian Embassy in 1995 of the significance of this historical building.
